What is the u3a?

A world of new experiences is open to you at u3a – so what’s stopping you?
If you are no longer in full-time work or raising a family – u3a gives you opportunity to develop your interests, make new friends and have fun. There are more than 1,000 local u3as – spread right across the UK – and members are making the most of life by continuing their creative, educational or social interests in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere. From walking to Talking, Geology to Genealogy, Yachting to Yoga, Current Affairs to Supper Clubs – the choice is endless – and the decision about what to do is made by the members for members.

For new members we hold New Members’ Welcome Meetings to tell you about our activities.

Founded in 1982 u3a* in the UK is a collection of locally-run interest groups that provide a wide range of opportunities to come together to learn for fun. People enjoy exploring new ideas, skills and activities together. There are 1,039 u3as with over 430,000 members. Membership is open to everyone who’s no longer in full-time work.

* originally called the University of the Third Age, now u3a

What we do

Arun East u3a was formed in 2013 on the division of Arun u3a into three separate u3as (the others being Littlehampton and Arun West). The Arun East u3a is centred on Angmering, East Preston, Ferring and Rustington. The Trustees are elected by the members and form the Executive Committee which is responsible for managing its affairs in accordance with a Constitution approved by the Charity Commission and the Third Age Trust.

Our members can enjoy a wide range of activities which include our Monthly meetings, over 120 Interest Groups, outings, trips, holidays and social events.

Our wide range of groups enables members to share each other’s interests and pursuits and cover educational, recreational, physical and cultural interests.

Each Arun East u3a Group is organised by one or more volunteers who have a particular expertise or interest in the activity (we are always open to suggestions for new groups and much support can be provided). Many Groups meet in members’ homes. Some larger Groups including those participating in physical activities use external venues in and around the area, Each group is self supporting and the cost will be dependent on the expense of running the group, including hall hire and any necessary materials. Details of our Groups and our attendances, absence and waiting list policies can be found on the Groups page.

Meetings, Talks & other Activities

Our Monthly Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Woodlands Centre in Rustington. We have a varied programme of talks given by invited speakers and the meetings are an opportunity to meet fellow members and catch up on the latest news and sign up for trips and events. Monthly meetings are free to members and £2 for non members.
We also run short History Lecture courses by in-house lecturers. These are accompanied by PowerPoint presentations.
Other events open to all our members include our biannual Quizzes, Dances and Social Events.

Trips (Outings & Holidays)

We have a dedicated subcommittee who organise our trips.
Our Coach Outings cover a wide area of interests including Garden Visits, Concerts, Theatre Trips, Stately Homes, Animal Parks etc. We usually run at least one trip a month, but often there are two.
We also run an Out & About group with a small team who organise car share trips to interesting places.
Holidays are organised both in the UK and abroad. A list of our outings, holidays and events can be seen in our Diary.
All u3a members can also attend the wide range of activities and Events organised by the u3a Office.
